Love in the Air but Don’t Despair
There’s enormous pressures to make the most of Valentine’s Day but the fact is that those pressures have become so terribly commercialized over the years so that the day becomes the festival of over-priced greetings cards, over-priced bouquets of flowers, schmaltzy gifts that no one really wants and meals in restaurants at inflated prices.
It doesn’t have to be this way! You can show your one true love just how much you care without getting trapped in the rat race of Valentine’s commerce. So here’s just a few budget ideas.
Tip No 1: Sing her a Song
Make up a simple song – or listen to Frank Sinatra singing “My Funny Valentine” (you’ll find it on You Tube) and serenade your sweetheart at the appropriate time – be it first cup of coffee or the romantic evening meal. Either she’ll love your singing or she’ll have a good laugh – either way you can’t lose!
Tip No 2: Make Mine Music
Get a blank CD and download twenty of her favorite all-time songs. Songs from way back when, the song that was playing on the radio the night you first went out or when one of the kids were born. Choose them carefully and then when you’ve finished write a little poem on the cover.
Tip No 3: Cook Her the Meal of Her Dreams
It will mean so much if you take over the whole planning and execution of this evening. Dip into the internet to get some special recipes and test them out if possible. If you can’t cook, find a local restaurant that does reasonably priced home banquets and make sure you have a pleasant but inexpensive wine on hand. Lay out the room with hearts and just a few flowers, cue the music and turn the lights down low. How can you go wrong?
Tip No 4: Hand Make a Card
It really is the thought that counts, especially on Valentine’s Day, and a card that you have lovingly crafted will be something that will be treasured for years ahead when commercial funny cards have long been forgotten.
Tip No 5: A Valentine’s Day Scrapbook
Collect some photos, clippings, souvenirs into a book and have it ready to give her on the night. That will be a gift to remember.
Tip No 6: Do a Job
Offer to take over a household chore – cleaning the carpet and the furniture, polishing up where necessary. A day without work will make a big difference to any hard working housewife.
